Hochul expands lead over Stefanik by 25 percentage points in latest survey

In a recent Siena College poll, Governor Kathy Hochul's favorability and job approval ratings have reached their highest levels since January 2024, marking a significant improvement from her previous ratings.

The poll, conducted between September 8th and 10th, shows that a majority of registered voters in New York prefer Governor Hochul over Republican representative Elise Stefanik as the state's executive. The governor leads with a 25-point margin, which is 11 points higher than last month.

Governor Hochul's increased popularity can be attributed to her perceived honesty, integrity, and hard work for the people of New York. Near-majorities also believe she demonstrates decisive leadership and gets things done.

The governor's endorsement of Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee in the race for New York City mayor, could also be contributing to her current favorability and job approval ratings. While she initially declined to endorse Mamdani following his shocking primary victory, she has now done so, which could serve her interests in New York City.

The poll shows an improvement in Governor Hochul's electoral lead since August. She leads with a majority of support in New York City, the suburbs, and has a plurality upstate. Among unaffiliated voters, Governor Hochul now leads Rep. Elise Stefanik, 43%-25%.

However, it's too soon to tell if the decision to endorse Mamdani will have a significant impact on Governor Hochul's numbers.

The poll also reveals that a majority of New York voters, 57%, believe that President Donald Trump should not send the National Guard into New York, a position strongly opposed by Governor Hochul. The new poll shows President Trump's favorability at a two-year low, with his worst job approval since the beginning of his second term.

Governor Hochul's public opposition to President Trump may be a factor in her current favorability and job approval ratings. Her stance on various issues, including healthcare and the National Guard, resonates with a majority of New York voters, who view her spending bill as a threat to necessary health care programs.

In summary, the Siena College poll indicates a significant improvement in Governor Kathy Hochul's favorability and job approval ratings, as well as her electoral lead over Rep. Elise Stefanik. The governor's endorsement of Zohran Mamdani and her public opposition to President Donald Trump may be contributing factors to her current popularity.
