HMS Active launches as Royal Navy's newest Type 31 frigate takes shape
HMS Active, the Royal Navy's newest Type 31 frigate, has touched water for the first time at Rosyth. The milestone marks a key step in the UK's shipbuilding programme, with five vessels planned under the National Shipbuilding Strategy. This second-in-class warship honours a Falklands veteran while preparing for modern global operations.
The float-out of HMS Active took place entirely at Babcock's Rosyth shipyard, a first for the Type 31 programme. Unlike previous launches, no external transport was needed, streamlining the process for future vessels.
The 5,700-tonne frigate is designed for flexibility, carrying a Wildcat or Merlin helicopter and housing a core crew of around 110. Its armament includes a 57mm main gun, Sea Ceptor air defence missiles, and a modular mission bay for specialised tasks. These features support roles from maritime security to forward deployment worldwide. HMS *Active* follows in the name of a Type 21 frigate that fought in the Falklands War, reinforcing the Royal Navy's tradition of global presence. All five Type 31 frigates—including *Bulldog*, *Campbeltown*, *Formidable*, *Lance*, and *Ludlow*—are expected to enter service by 2030, with Rosyth serving as the central build hub.
The launch of HMS Active advances the UK's naval capabilities, with four more Type 31 frigates in progress. These ships will expand the Royal Navy's reach, combining modern weaponry with adaptable mission systems. The programme remains on track for full delivery by the end of the decade.
