Hit-and-run probe after three lorries crash on icy A38 near Merseburg
A serious crash involving three lorries took place on the A38 near Merseburg-South in the early hours of yesterday. The incident occurred at around 2:30 AM, causing partial lane blockages and prompting police to launch a hit-and-run investigation. Authorities are now warning drivers to take extra care as winter conditions worsen across the region.
The accident began when one lorry driver lost control due to excessive speed on icy roads. The vehicle struck the central guardrail, leaving debris scattered across the hard shoulder. Two more lorries then collided with each other while trying to swerve around the wreckage.
Police confirmed that an unidentified driver later struck a warning beacon at the scene and fled without stopping. Officers are now searching for this individual in connection with a hit-and-run offence.
With snow, sub-zero temperatures, and icy patches forecast for southern Saxony-Anhalt in the coming days, authorities have reminded motorists of Germany’s winter tyre regulations. These rules require suitable tyres in conditions such as black ice, slush, or frost. Drivers are also urged to reduce speed, keep a safe distance, and stay alert for sudden hazards.
The crash has led to an ongoing police investigation, with officers appealing for witnesses to come forward. Meanwhile, road users are being advised to prepare for difficult driving conditions. Compliance with winter tyre laws and cautious driving will be essential as the winter storm continues.
