Hit-and-run on icy A29 leaves police searching for reckless driver

A weather-related crash took place on the A29 motorway near Osnabrück in the early evening of Friday, January 2, 2026. The incident happened between the Oldenburg-Nord junction and the Bornhorster Wiesen rest area, leaving police searching for the driver responsible.

The accident occurred around 9:40 PM when a car driver tried to overtake another vehicle on the snow-covered road. The vehicle skidded into the passing lane and struck the central guardrail head-on.

Instead of stopping, the driver continued to the Bornhorster Wiesen rest area. Authorities believe they may have driven the wrong way on the parking lot while checking for damage. The identity of the driver remains unknown. Police are now appealing for witnesses, particularly the motorist who was directly behind the car at the time of the collision.

The investigation is ongoing, with officers urging anyone with information to come forward. The driver’s failure to stop and possible wrong-way manoeuvre at the rest area have raised concerns about road safety in winter conditions. Authorities continue to examine the scene for further details.
