Taking the Fight Home: Russian Soldiers Turned Volunteers on Kyiv's Side

In the heart of the current conflict, three all-volunteer units made up of Russian nationals stand out, causing a mix of confusion and intrigue. They're playing a crucial role in Ukraine's fight against the Russians, and these fighting forces – Freedom of Russia Legion, Russian Volunteer Corps, and Sibir Battalion – present both potential and challenges for Kyiv.

During an interview in 2024, a commander from the Freedom of Russia Legion summed up their mission: "If not us, then who?" Their objectives are clear - depose Putin, force Russia's withdrawal from Ukraine, and establish a free, peaceful, and prosperous Russia.

The Russian Volunteer Corps, formed a few months later, comprises war refugees, former military prisoners of war, mercenaries, and border soldiers. They promote an ethnonationalist agenda, opposing Russia's aggression while favoring a Russian national state for Russian-populated territories.

Lastly, the Sibir Battalion is the youngest of the three, created in 2023, and consists primarily of ethnic minorities from Russia's economically marginalized far east. Their grievances revolve around social and economic inequalities, pushing them to join Ukraine's war effort.

Despite receiving recognition from the European Parliament, these units present unique challenges for Kyiv. Russia's leadership views their activities as an affront, pointing to the Russian Liberation Army (RLA) during the Great Patriotic War as a historical reference. Stating that any Russian soldierying against Ukraine would be punished without any statute of limitations, Vladimir Putin has labeled such soldiers as "Vlasovites," referring to the RLA's former Soviet General.

Examining the past, we turn to history, drawing parallels with the Confederate prisoners of war during the American Civil War who became known as the Galvanized Yankees. In both cases, soldiers switch allegiances for reasons of survival, ideology, or circumstance. For the Ukrainian battlefield of today, these Russian volunteers add a layer of complexity to the ongoing struggle, blurring distinctions between nationalities and loyalties in conflict zones.

Kyle Nappi, a national security specialist who descends from the Galvanized Yankees, has interviewed thousands of Allied and Axis combatants during World War II, gaining deeper insights into the human condition of war and conflict. His engagement with foreign legionnaires on the Eastern Front has lain a foundation for understanding the modern intricacies seen in the Ukrainian-Russian conflict.
