Masada's Stubborn Standoff (AD 74)

One of the most controversial chapters in Jewish history unfolded on this day, circa AD 74. The Roman province of Judaea was in turmoil due to anti-tax protests that had spiraled into a full-blown rebellion. The Romans, however, were not one to back down easily. By spring 74, the last of the Jewish rebels found themselves trapped in the mighty fortress of Masada, teetering over the edge of the Dead Sea.

The Roman siege of Masada had prolonged for months, with the Jewish defenders settling in for a grim wait as the Romans tirelessly constructed their ramparts and siege engines. In the twilight of the night, the attackers managed to set the wooden walls of Masada ablaze. With renewed vigor, they planned their final assault for dawn the next day. Yet, they were met with an eerie silence.

As daylight broke, the Romans found only a pair of frightened women huddled in a cistern, who revealed the grisly truth. In the hour before, their Jewish leader, Eleazar ben Ya'ir, had persuaded the defenders to take their lives rather than surrender to the Romans. They chose death rather than the humiliation of slavery – a chilling testament to their determination and defiance.
