Historic rockslide delays Highway 20's latest reopening in 54 years

Highway 20 remains closed as crews work to clear a major rockslide and stabilise the surrounding area. The road, typically open by late April, is now set for its latest seasonal reopening in 54 years. Drivers are being advised to check updates before planning travel. The highway shut for winter between milepost 134 and milepost 178. But in March, a rockslide near milepost 130 buried the route under roughly 200 feet of debris. This has extended the closure well beyond the usual seasonal shutdown.

WSDOT teams are now clearing unstable rock and reinforcing the slope to ensure safe passage. The active work zone spans milepost 130 to 156, with no public access permitted. Last year, the road reopened on April 22. This time, delays mean it will open later than ever before in its recorded history. The pass has previously opened as early as March 10 or as late as June 14. For real-time updates, drivers can use the WSDOT mobile app, the mountain passes page, or the live travel map. Email alerts are also available for those wanting direct notifications on road conditions.

The extended closure follows a significant rockslide and ongoing stabilisation efforts. Officials have not yet confirmed a new opening date. Until then, travellers must use alternative routes or check WSDOT resources for the latest information.
