In the heart of Estonia, a new film project is taking shape. Titled "By the Grace of Dogs", this historical 19th century drama with Western elements promises to be a captivating exploration of resilience, love, and the power of friendship.

Set on the lands of Õisu Manor in Viljandi County, the film follows the lives of two brothers, Juhan and Jaak, after the tragic loss of their parents. While Jaak remains on the manor, Juhan falls under the care of the dog boy Hart, and is relegated to the kennels. However, it is here that he finds unexpected solace and support from the dogs, who share warmth and food, and develop a bond with him.

Directed by Katariina Aule, the film is a poignant portrayal of two worlds: the opulent manor life and the humble rural life. Aule, expressing her gratitude for the opportunity, promises a story that will move anyone who watches. Urmas Lennuk, the screenplay writer, has crafted a dramatic narrative filled with tragic events and twists, exploring themes of fate, time, and the rediscovery of loved ones, guided by loyal dogs.

The main character, Juhan, is played by Leonhard Kõuhkna, a talented 8-year-old actor, while Silver Kaljula takes on the role of Hart. The screen test, conducted last week at Paasiku Dogs' Manor, was a testament to the promising potential of this production.

The story of "By the Grace of Dogs" is based on the early diaries of Juhan Kull, adapted in the 1970s by Olaf Rebane, with a screenplay by Urmas Lennuk. The person who brought the story from Boston to Estonia and supported its transformation into a film remains unidentified in the provided search results.

Producer Veiko Esken describes the project as "a rare alignment of stars that gives birth to something unprecedented." The film is still in development, with the team planning to apply for an Estonian Film Institute (EFI) production grant later this year.

As the production progresses, "By the Grace of Dogs" promises to be a poignant and thought-provoking film that delves into the human spirit's capacity to endure adversity and find solace in the most unexpected places. With historical consultant Fred Puss on board, the film is sure to offer an accurate portrayal of the era. Aili Maarja serves as the executive producer, with Tiina Lokk consulting. Anne-Reet Ilves Annunziata, a relative of Olaf Rebane, is thanked for bringing the story from Boston to Estonia.
