Norwalk High School's Girls Flag Football Team Secures a Thrilling Victory

In a nail-biting double overtime game, junior Kianna Rangel scored the game-winning point for Cerritos High School, giving them a 13-12 victory over Norwalk High School in the first-ever girls flag football match between the two schools 1.

The exciting contest saw both teams showcasing impressive offensive performances. In the first quarter, Cerritos managed five plays for a total of 10 yards, while Norwalk had 12 plays and picked up 43 yards, scoring their first touchdown. Sophomore Leah Estrella ran in a touchdown for Norwalk in the first quarter, and senior Jazmin Jimenez scored a touchdown in the first overtime, giving them a 12-6 lead 2.

Rangel, who completed four passes for 16 yards and rushed seven times for negative yards in the first half, caught a short three-yard pass from senior quarterback Camille Mangahis to secure the victory for Cerritos. Mangahis, who was 10 of 12 for 34 yards passing and added 44 yards on six carries, also ran in for a two-yard touchdown to tie the game 3.

Sophomore Julia Santos was stopped a yard short of the goal line on fourth down in the fourth quarter, potentially denying Cerritos a go-ahead touchdown. However, Norwalk's offense managed to respond, with Jimenez scoring a touchdown to take a 12-6 lead in the first overtime 4.

The victory marked a significant milestone for Cerritos High School, as it was their first game in school history. It was also the first CIF-Southern Section divisional championship for Cerritos High's first-year head coach Demel Franklin 5.

Meanwhile, Norwalk High School bounced back from their loss with an 18-6 victory over Bell Gardens High School this past Monday 6. Unfortunately, they lost to Long Beach Cabrillo High School with a score of 28-20 in their first game last season 7. Last season, Norwalk High was 7-6 before losing three straight and six of the final eight games 8.

The game was played in the shadow of a tragic event, as Norwalk High's offensive linemen coach Webster Peters passed away earlier in the week due to a heart-related issue 9.

In the upcoming week, Norwalk High will travel to Western High today and entertain Saddleback High on Monday. They will also play against Anaheim High on Monday, entertain Culver City on Tuesday, and go to Long Beach Jordan High on Wednesday 10. Cerritos, on the other hand, will not have a game until next week.
