Restored Coach House of Magdeburg Puppet Theater Opens - Historic Coach House Transformed into Modern Annex for Magdeburg Puppet Theater
Magdeburg's historic coach house, over 140 years old, has been beautifully restored. The project, which began in 2015, has seen the listed building transformed into a modern annex for the city's beloved Puppet Theater. The renovation has cost over 2.1 million euros, with the city council initially estimating around 1.65 million.
The coach house, originally built in 1884 as part of a factory owner's villa, once housed stables and the coachman's quarters. Now, it boasts a new rehearsal stage, painting room, and storage, all roughly the size of the main stage. This will significantly enhance the theater's operations.
The Puppet Theater, founded in 1958, attracts over 52,000 guests annually, hosting over 400 events. The restoration project faced delays and cost overruns, but the final result is a testament to the city's commitment to preserving its heritage while supporting the arts. The administration will also relocate to the coach house, further integrating it into the theater's operations.
The restored coach house, with its new rehearsal stage and facilities, promises to enrich the Magdeburg Puppet Theater's offerings. The 2.1 million euro investment has not only preserved a historic building but also equipped the theater for future growth. The administration's move to the coach house will further streamline operations, benefiting both the theater and its visitors.
