Hired: Jeff Tambellini as Assistant General Manager and Director of Hockey Operations by Lightning
After spending 12 seasons and 706 games across the NHL, AHL, SHL, and Swiss NL, Jeff Tambellini has embarked on a new chapter in his career, joining the Tampa Bay Lightning as the assistant general manager and director of hockey operations.
Tambellini's professional journey began in 2003 when he was a first-round pick by the Los Angeles Kings. After spending most of his North American professional career in the AHL, he headed to Europe in 2011, playing in Switzerland and Sweden before retiring in 2017.
Following his retirement, Tambellini transitioned into hockey management and front-office roles. His post-playing career path includes serving as a scout for the Tampa Bay Lightning during the 2020-21 season, a role that marked his entry into hockey operations after his playing career ended.
In 2022, Tambellini moved to the Seattle Kraken, where he served as the Director of Player Development for three seasons. This critical role, especially for an expansion team like the Kraken, saw him overseeing the development of players within the organization.
In July 2025, Tambellini returned to the Lightning in a major front-office capacity. He was hired as the Assistant General Manager, Director of Hockey Operations, and Vice President. In this role, he will assist General Manager Julien BriseBois in all aspects of player personnel decisions, analytics, player development, contract negotiations, budgeting, salary-cap tracking, and managing the hockey operations staff.
Tambellini's return to the Lightning organization is being facilitated by Julien BriseBois, who praised Tambellini's strong leadership and communication skills. BriseBois also highlighted Tambellini's broad hockey background, which extends to general management responsibilities, scouting, player recruitment, development, and coaching, making him a well-rounded executive in hockey operations.
Tambellini's family, including his wife Justine and their two children, are moving to Tampa Bay. In his new role, Tambellini's responsibilities will be comprehensive, covering all aspects of the organization.
The Vinik Sports Group has welcomed Tambellini to Tampa Bay, and he is joining the Lightning's management staff in his new role. With his extensive experience and proven track record, Tambellini is poised to make a significant impact on the Lightning's hockey operations.
Tambellini's extensive experience in various hockey leagues, including the NHL, will likely be beneficial as he assists General Manager Julien BriseBois in player personnel decisions for the Tampa Bay Lightning. In his new role as Assistant General Manager and Director of Hockey Operations, Tambellini will also oversee player development, contract negotiations, and other aspects of the organization's hockey operations.
