Hindu Unity Under Threat: Vijayendra Alleges Congress Manipulates Caste Census to Foster Division Among Hindus, Calls for Inclusion of 'Hindu' in Religion Category
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emphasized during its political 'Chintan Shivir' (brainstorming session) that people belonging to any caste or community must mention only 'Hindu' under the religion column during the upcoming Social and Educational Survey (caste census). This decision, according to BJP leaders, has been met with approval from the people of the state and the country.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, speaking at the Shivir, praised the Modi government for simplifying the Goods and Services Tax (GST). The BJP leaders unanimously complimented Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for this achievement.
The Social and Educational Survey, scheduled to take place between September 22 and October 7, is expected to cost Rs 420 crore. However, the BJP politician, B Y Vijayendra, the president of the Karnataka BJP, has urged people to declare 'Hindu' in the religion column during the survey.
Vijayendra accused the Congress government in Karnataka of turning the caste census into an exercise to divide the Hindu society. He alleged that the government has created 47 new castes, including Christian Lingayat, Christian Vokkaliga, Christian Weaver, Christian Scheduled Caste, and Tribe, thereby causing confusion.
The previous Siddaramaiah government, according to Vijayendra, had referred to Veerashaiva-Lingayat as a distinct religion, which he claimed set fire in society. In contrast, the Mahasabha of Veerashaiva-Lingayat has urged its members to identify as Veerashaiva-Lingayat in the religion column during the Social and Educational Survey.
Vijayendra further claimed that Rahul Gandhi was the only reason Siddaramaiah's government discarded the Kantharaju report, a caste census report prepared by the State Backwards Classes Commission, which was chaired by H Kantharaju, and was finalised by K Jayaprakash Hegde, Siddaramaiah's successor.
The BJP's reiteration and Vijayendra's accusations come amidst the upcoming Social and Educational Survey, a contentious issue in Karnataka politics. The survey is expected to provide valuable data on the state's socio-economic landscape, but the debate over the religion column's content continues to stir discussions.
