Hilary Knight makes emotional return as Seattle Torrent falls to Ottawa Charge
Hilary Knight returned to action on Sunday night after recovering from a lower-body injury. The Seattle Torrent faced the Ottawa Charge in a key match, though their playoff hopes had already faded. Knight's comeback came just in time for the struggling team.
Knight had been sidelined on long-term injured reserve (LTIR) but was cleared to play ahead of the game. Her return required a roster adjustment, with Brooke Bryant shifting to the reserve list. Before her injury, Knight had recorded three goals and seven assists in 15 games this season.
The match began with Ottawa taking control early. Sarah Wozniewicz opened the scoring, putting the Charge ahead 1-0. Later, Peyton Hemp extended the lead to 2-0, sealing the win for her team. Seattle, now holding a 7-14-3 record, remains well outside playoff contention. The PWHL's 'Gold Plan' draft system discourages teams from intentionally losing to secure better draft picks. However, Seattle's struggles this season have been genuine, with little chance of a late turnaround. Knight's injury had initially been reported as occurring during the 2026 Winter Games. But since those Olympics have not yet taken place, her absence was unrelated to international play.
Ottawa's 2-0 victory keeps them in stronger playoff position, while Seattle's season continues to wind down. Knight's return provides a bright spot for the Torrent, though their postseason chances have already slipped away. The team will now focus on finishing the season with improved performances.
