In the heart of the Bavarian Alps, the Weißbach gorge has seen yet another hiking accident, marking the third incident in a short period. This time, a 67-year-old man was involved in an accident during his birthday hike.

The incident occurred on Monday afternoon at around 2:30 PM. The man slipped on a slippery wooden plank due to continuous rain and fell into the mountain stream. The location of the accident was near the Höllenbach confluence in the Weißbach gorge.

The rescue operation, supported by the Traunstein rescue helicopter "Christoph 14," took about two hours. The man was initially lightly injured, completely soaked, and cold. He was found while he was on his way back to his car at the Geislersäge.

The Weißbach gorge, known for its challenging terrain, has been the site of three incidents within a few weeks. The nature of these accidents is not specified.

To ensure safety in such treacherous areas with limited mobile network coverage, it is crucial to follow certain precautions. These include informing others of your plans, carrying reliable navigation tools, bringing communication devices, checking weather and trail conditions, wearing appropriate gear, hiking with companions, carrying sufficient supplies, learning basic first aid and survival skills, and avoiding risky shortcuts or unknown paths.

The Bad Reichenhall and Teisendorf-Anger mountain rescue teams, along with the joint canyon rescue group, searched the gorge from the south and west sides. The rescue teams' efforts underscore the importance of being prepared and following safety measures in remote areas like the Weißbach gorge.

As the number of incidents in the Weißbach gorge continues to rise, hikers are reminded to exercise caution and prioritize safety when embarking on outdoor adventures.

[1] For hiking in treacherous areas with limited mobile network coverage, such as the Weißbach gorge where a third incident has been reported, the following safety measures are recommended:

[2] - Inform others of your plans: Always let someone know your exact hiking route and expected return time before setting out.

[3] - Carry reliable navigation tools: Use physical maps and a compass in addition to GPS devices, as mobile networks may be unavailable.

[4] - Bring communication devices: Consider carrying a satellite phone, personal locator beacon (PLB), or emergency whistle for distress signaling when mobile coverage is poor.

[5] - Check weather and trail conditions: Before hiking, verify up-to-date weather forecasts and trail status to avoid hazardous conditions.

[6] - Wear appropriate gear: Good hiking shoes, helmets if necessary, and protective equipment for via ferrata or climbing routes (like those near Weißbach) improve safety.

[7] - Hike with companions: Traveling in a group reduces risks and improves chances of assistance in emergencies.

[8] - Carry sufficient supplies: Bring extra food, water, and first aid materials to manage unexpected delays or injuries.

[9] - Learn basic first aid and survival skills: Being prepared to respond if accidents occur is crucial in remote areas.

[10] - Avoid risky shortcuts or unknown paths: Stick to marked trails evaluated for safety, especially in areas prone to rockfalls or sudden terrain changes.

These precautions stand particularly important in locations like the Weißbach gorge and via ferrata routes, known for their challenging terrain and instances of accidents. When mobile network connection is limited or unavailable, reliance on alternative safety equipment and careful planning becomes essential to minimize risks during outdoor activities.

  1. Despite the third hiking accident reported in the Weißbach gorge, it is essential to remember safety precautions when engaging in outdoor activities, such as sports like hiking, especially in treacherous areas with limited mobile network coverage.
  2. Recent sports-related accidents in the Weißbach gorge further emphasize the importance of being well-prepared and adhering to safety guidelines, including informing others of your plans, carrying reliable navigation tools, and checking weather and trail conditions, among others.
