Hike Father and Daughter Perish, Awaiting Discovery on Mount Katahdin in Maine: Authorities Report
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, a father and daughter duo from Ulster Park, New York met their end during a hike to the summit of Mount Katahdin in Maine. The pair, Tim Keiderling (58) and Esther Keiderling (28), embarked on their trek on Sunday, but vanished without a trace after being last seen on the Abol Trail in the Tablelands, bound for the summit.
The extensive search for the duo began on Monday, when Baxter State Park rangers found their vehicle still parked at the trailhead in the day-use parking lot. As the days passed, the search expanded to include numerous game wardens, search and rescue teams, K9 units, forest service personnel, and the Maine Army National Guard in an aerial search.
On Tuesday, the body of Tim Keiderling was discovered near the summit at around 2:24 p.m. in the Tablelands. A day later, Esther's body was found in a wooded area off the Tablelands between the Cathedral and Saddle trails, approximately 1,000 feet from where her father was discovered.
The tragedy has left many mourning the loss of Tim and Esther, with Baxter State Park expressing their condolences on social media. The park emphasized the strenuous nature of hiking Katahdin, emphasizing that even the most seasoned hikers should be well-prepared for the challenges that may arise.
In light of this incident, it's crucial for hikers to prioritize preparation and awareness when attempting to conquer the daunting trails of Mount Katahdin.
