Highway in East Houston, I-10, resumes traffic flow following closure due to fallen power lines
In an unexpected turn of events, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) alerted the public about a closure on Interstate 10 (I-10) at Lathrop Street in Houston around 4:35 p.m. on Tuesday, August 19, 2025.
The closure was caused by a combination of a two-vehicle incident and downed power lines, which were the result of a lightning strike. Both eastbound and westbound lanes were initially blocked, leading to a full shutdown of the freeway at that location during the afternoon rush hour.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Crews from CenterPoint Energy and TxDOT worked diligently to clear the downed lines and the incident scene. By shortly after 5 p.m., all lanes on I-10 at Lathrop Street were reopened.
The Houston TranStar agency confirmed that two vehicles were involved in the incident. However, no new details about the two-vehicle incident were provided. As for the downed power lines, there has been no update on their current status.
Travelers are urged to find alternate routes due to the incident on I-10. Unfortunately, no estimate has been given for when the road will fully reopen or when the scene will be completely cleared.
This incident has caused a significant disruption on I-10 in Houston, and no additional information about its impact on traffic in the city was provided.
