Highway 63 shut down as freezing rain paralyzes northeastern Alberta travel

Freezing rain has left Highway 63 in northeastern Alberta nearly impassable, forcing drivers to a halt. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has responded to several collisions in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and is warning motorists to avoid the area if possible.

Environment Canada issued a winter storm warning for the region earlier today. The icy conditions have made travel dangerous, particularly on the northbound lanes of Highway 63 toward Fort McMurray. Multiple vehicles, including several semi-tractor trailers, have slid off the road or come to a stop in the ditch.

The RCMP continues to monitor the situation as crews work to clear the highway. Drivers are being told to delay travel until conditions become safer. The winter storm warning remains in effect for northeastern Alberta.
