Highway 404 shut down as freezing drizzle creates black ice chaos

A stretch of Highway 404 in Whitchurch-Stouffville has been shut down due to hazardous winter weather. The closure began on Saturday evening after freezing drizzle created treacherous driving conditions across the area. Authorities have warned that the icy surfaces could persist for hours, leading to prolonged disruptions.

Environment Canada issued a yellow advisory for the Stouffville region earlier in the day. The warning highlighted the risk of freezing drizzle forming invisible black ice on roads. By late afternoon, the slippery conditions had already contributed to multiple vehicle collisions.

The northbound lanes of Highway 404 were closed at Bloomington Road as a result. Police urged motorists to avoid the affected section entirely. Drivers travelling nearby were also advised to prepare for significant delays.

Forecasters expect the freezing drizzle to continue through Saturday evening. With temperatures hovering near freezing, any moisture on the roads is likely to turn to ice. The combination of poor visibility and slick surfaces has made travel particularly dangerous.

The closure remains in effect, and authorities have not yet provided a timeline for reopening. Police continue to monitor the situation and advise drivers to check for updates before heading out. The freezing drizzle warning stays active, meaning icy patches could still form even after the highway reopens.
