In the world of college football, allegations of gambling can cast a shadow over even the brightest of prospects. However, Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer has vehemently denied such claims that have recently surfaced.
Mateer, who is one of the nation's top transfers, has been a key contributor to Oklahoma's high ranking, having passed for 3,139 yards with 29 touchdowns and just seven interceptions last season. He also ran for 826 yards and 15 scores, showcasing his versatility on the field.
The allegations against Mateer stem from screenshots of his Venmo transactions from 2022, while he was a freshman at Washington State. These transactions, which circulated on social media, were accompanied by captions referencing sports gambling, including one involving a UCLA vs USC game.
However, Mateer has denied these allegations, stating that the captions were "inside jokes between me and my friends" and that he has never participated in sports betting. He further assured his teammates, coaches, and NCAA officials of his commitment to fair play.
Oklahoma University, too, has emphasised its stance on gambling allegations, working closely with the NCAA and claiming they are unaware of any NCAA investigation regarding Mateer. The university uses ProhiBet for comprehensive monitoring of sports gambling activities.
ESPN's Pete Thamel believes the scandal is likely to "fizzle out" as there is no concrete evidence to support the allegations. However, the situation remains under scrutiny, and any definitive conclusion would depend on further investigation or evidence. As of now, no official NCAA investigation has been announced.
Mateer's strong performance is considered a key reason for Oklahoma's high ranking, with the team opening the season ranked No. 18 in the AP Top 25.

Mateer followed former Washington State offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle to Oklahoma this past offseason, and his leadership has been consistently praised by coach Brent Venables and Oklahoma's players.
