Who Said Going Green Has to Cost a Pretty Penny? Electric Cars Drop Cents While Gasoline Pumps up Dollars

Electric cars thrive in these urban environments. - Highest Value of Electric Cars Found in These Urban Areas
Swap your gas guzzler for an electric whip (E-whip) and watch your bank account grow. That's right, your wallet won't just go green; it'll fatten up in the long run because electricity is usually cheaper than petrol. But how much can you squirrel away on petrol by choosing to charge your car instead?
Comparison mavericks Verivox took a closer peek at this and scrutinized fuel and electricity prices across the top 50 German cities.
The game plan: A hypothetical E-car owner plugs their car at home using the average residential electricity rate in each location. This is then put up against petrol prices at nearby stations, and the average cost of traveling 100 km in a compact vehicle gets calculated.
Save up to 55% on those pumps
Data crunching reveals that savings vary due to regional differences in electricity prices. The biggest bang for your buck is in Oldenburg, where electricity is particularly wallet-friendly. Here, an E-car chauffeur spends only 💶 4.83 for 100 km, compared to 💶10.69 for E10 petrol. That's a saving of 55%.
Similarly hefty savings of 54% can be found in Bremen and Nuremberg. Cities like Leipzig, Bonn, Augsburg, Magdeburg, Halle, and Rostock are also circling the drain for savings exceeding 50%.
In Hamburg, savings only come up to 39% due to pricier electricity. The remaining major players like Berlin (45% savings), Munich (47%), or Cologne (46%) sit somewhere in the middle. Swapping diesel for petrol doesn't change much in the game.
These figures are averages, and your mileage may fluctuate. Verivox suggests that electricity bills could be higher at public charging stations.
But the key takeaway remains, "Gear up for an electric ride – it's got higher upfront expenses, but your daily costs will slash practically in half," says Thorsten Storck, energy guru at Verivox. "Travel the same distance, and your home electricity bill will cost less than half compared to gasoline or diesel."
- The Commission has also been consulted on the following issues: The cost savings of using electricity for powering an electric car compared to using petrol, with an emphasis on the regional variations in electricity prices and their impact on the overall cost savings.
- Verivox found that electricity is usually cheaper than petrol in most cities.
- In some cities, like Oldenburg, Bremen, and Nuremberg, electric cars can save up to 55% when compared to petrol, while in cities like Hamburg, savings are still significant at 39%.
