Flooding Threat in Baden-Württemberg: Extreme Rain and Melting Snow Affecting the Rhine
The southwestern region of Germany, specifically Baden-Württemberg, is currently grappling with severe flooding. This is primarily due to an unusual blend of melting snow and heavy rain, especially in the Black Forest region.
The Rhine, a major river running through Karlsruhe, has already seen shipping suspended due to high water levels exceeding 7.50 meters during the morning hours on Tuesday. According to the First Harbour Master of the Karlsruhe Rhine ports, there's a possibility for the water level to further rise in the coming days.
The Baden-Württemberg Flood Forecasting Center predictions indicate that the peak of the flooding is expected on Thursday, raising concerns for both residences and commercial establishments near the river. The flood water levels on the High Rhine near Hauenstein and the Upper Rhine near Kehl have also been surpassed, potentially causing further rises in water levels.
The interplay of melting snow and precipitation makes the flood forecasts quite unpredictable at the moment. According to a spokeswoman, there are new forecast models every three hours.
The German Weather Service has reported more wet weather in the region, with widespread rain, including heavy rainfall in the Black Forest and Upper Swabian Allgäu. These areas can expect up to 40 liters per square meter to fall within 30 hours. Even the southern Black Forest will experience thunderstorms and heavy rainfall of up to 70 liters per square meter in 30 hours.
By Wednesday night and early Wednesday morning, isolated small floods may form in the south of the country, impacting rivers in the Black Forest, Swabian Alb, and Upper Swabia. At the moment, Lake Constance, despite having a high water level, is not a significant concern, with no signs of flooding as of now.
