Disney-Marvel's action-packed blockbuster, Thunderbolts, is expected to rake in an impressive $73 million to $77 million during its opening weekend at the domestic box office, taking the reins as the top film of the 2025 summer movie season.

According to industry insiders at Deadline, the anticipated weekend box office for the film is close to the estimates from both trade publications, Variety and Deadline, made earlier this week.

The good news is, if these estimates hold, the figures place Thunderbolts at the high end of tracking numbers originally released by The Hollywood Reporter on April 10, which indicated a potential $63 million to $77 million opening weekend take in North American theaters.

On the downside, Deadline's projection falls short of Box Office Pro's earlier prediction of an $80 million to $90 million opening for Thunderbolts.

With its release in 4,330 North American theaters, the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to hit the screens. In comparison, Disney's MCU movie, Captain America: Brave New World, secured a three-day opening tally of $88.5 million at the domestic box office from 4,105 theaters in mid-February.

Thunderbolts, which focuses on the adventures of a group of antiheroes, may still have ground to cover before reaching profitability, as Disney reportedly spent $180 million on production and $100 million on marketing.

While initial April forecasts pointed towards a domestic opening of $65 million to $85 million, recent May estimates peg the opening at a slightly lower $73 million to $77 million. The film could, however, defy expectations, as the positive buzz surrounding it suggests it may emerge victorious over the box office projections.

Director Ryan Coogler's Sinners, which opened with $48 million two weeks ago and had a surprisingly strong second weekend hold with $45.7 million, is projected to earn anywhere from $30 million to $35 million in its third weekend, maintaining its position as the second highest-grossing film in North America.

As the 2025 summer movie season continues, Thunderbolts is well-positioned to captivate audiences and leave its mark on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
