High-value Blue Bresil horse, bred from the same lineage as Constitution Hill, purchased by Elliott for €235,000.
🥁💥 ROARING THROUGH THE TATTERSALLS IRELAND DERBY SALE 💥🥁
Hold onto your horses, folks! The Tattersalls Ireland Derby Sale was an exhilarating 2-day ride, and day 2 was sheer madness. Demand was relentless from flagfall to the finish line, with a whopping €10,399,000 transacted during the second session alone.
The highlight of the day? A Blue Bresil gelding that fetched an eye-popping €235,000! Gordon Elliott snagged this "lovely athletic horse" who was eagerly awaited by the trainer all day long. Elliott shared, "We will get him home now and broken in. His half-brother, Handstands, is a very talented horse."
Now, Handstands is no slouch. The six-year-old son of Getaway gave a run for his money to none other than Jango Baie, the subsequent Arkle victor, in the Grade 1 Scilly Isles Novices' Chase. Handstands, winner of six out of nine starts, has proved himself a force to be reckoned with.
Interestingly, Handstands was bought by Glenvale Stud for €75,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland November National Hunt Sale, while his Blue Bresil half-brother fetched €70,000 at the 2022 edition of the same sale.
This gelding and another Walk In The Park, sold for a combined €445,000 on Thursday, were massive pinhook punts for Flash Conroy and Aiden Murphy. What's more, this gelding and the Walk In The Park who set the ball rolling earlier in the day were a significant win for Blue Bresil, whose impressive transaction marked his first six-figure sale.
Blue Bresil, while best known as Constitution Hill's sire, saw solid but not spectacular results for his second Irish-bred crop this time round. However, his Derby Sale Part 1 average shot up to €44,696, and his median reached €35,000, making a notable impact on the two-event sale.
Overall, the 2025 Derby Sale posted one of the best aggregates in its recent history, with a total of €17,576,000—a figure that's been topped only thrice before—in 2017, 2018, and 2022. The two-day average of €53,261 is also the fourth best in the Derby Sale’s history, and the €43,000 median matches that achieved in 2017 and 2023, having been beaten only twice before.
As for the highest grossing sire during the two days, the crown goes to Coolmore's champion stallion Walk In The Park with 22 lots sold for €1,788,000. The Beeches Stud's Crystal Ocean follows closely behind with €1,750,000 for 29 lots sold, while Poet's Word rounds out the top three with sales of €1,551,000 for 29 lots.
The 2025 Derby Sale conclusion is on Friday with the single-session Part Two, set to begin at 10am. Now, y'all know what time it is! Let's see those horses run! 🏃🐎💨
