High temperatures trigger UV alert across Portugal
Portugal and Madeira Face High Risks of Harmful UV Radiation
Over the weekend, mainland Portugal and the Madeira archipelago are under considerable danger from excessive ultraviolet (UV) radiation. According to the Portuguese Meteorological Institute (IPMA), regions at extreme risk should minimize sun exposure as much as possible.
On Saturday, São Miguel in the Azores archipelago will experience high levels of UV radiation, with Flores having moderate levels. In contrast, Faial and Terceira will experience high levels. Temperatures across mainland Portugal are projected to rise over the next several days.
On Sunday, the Azores archipelago will be at a very high risk, except Flores which is at a high risk. Regions with very high risk should use sunglasses with UV filters, hats, t-shirts, umbrellas, sunscreen, and shield children from the sun. High-risk regions should wear sunglasses, hats, t-shirts, and sunscreen.
IPMA forecasts partly cloudy skies, light winds, and a slight increase in maximum temperatures in the North and Central regions for today and the weekend on the continent. Minimum temperatures will range between 9°C in Braganca and 16°C in Faro and Setubal, while maximum temperatures will vary between 22°C in Aveiro and 31°C in Beja.
The Madeira archipelago expects periods of cloudy skies, light showers on the northern slope and in the highlands today and Saturday, as well as light to moderate winds. Temperatures in Funchal will fluctuate between 19°C and 25°C, with Porto Santo temperatures between 18°C and 23°C.
The IPMA forecasts generally cloudy skies, periods of light rain or drizzle, and light winds in the Azores archipelago over the weekend. Island temperatures will range between 16°C and 25°C.
As of the latest data, no hazardous weather warnings have been issued for any Azores islands, and weather-sensitive activities are safe at this time. However, the general UV radiation risk for the Azores is high to very high, though specific UV indices by island are not provided in the public summary by IPMA.
It is recommended to monitor local forecasts on the IPMA website for updates when visiting smaller or more remote islands. To protect yourself from harm, use sun protection measures if spending time outdoors.
On Saturday, while the Azores' Flores has moderate UV radiation levels, São Miguel, Faial, and Terceira face high levels. In light of Portugal's high UV radiation risks, it's crucial to practice sun protection measures, especially in environmental-science and climate-change contexts, as advised by the IPMA.
