Phones & Pedals: A Toxic Mix on Wheels
Distraction at the wheel remains a prevalent issue. During this speed week, 17 instances of electronic device misuse were detected, even among cyclists. Cyclists also accounted for 24 traffic violations, such as using bike lanes improperly. Meanwhile, among e-scooter riders, 26 offenses were documented, with an additional 49 riders disregarding traffic regulations. Shockingly, ten drivers were found to be driving without a valid license, and 21 appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The week's climax unfolded on May 30, in Bedburg-Hau, as a motorcyclist seemingly transformed Kalkarer Straße into a racing track. A 27-year-old rider, still in his probationary period, leaned into a racing position and floorboarded it, reaching a breaking-neck pace of 106 mph in a 62 mph zone.
Public highways are not racetracks, police sharply remark
Coppers nabbed the adrenaline junkie, who now faces a hefty fine of 200 euros and a deserving driving ban. To top it off, aside from a helmet, he wore no protective gear.
Dress to Thrill or Thrill to Death?
Despite the risk-taking display, the police harshly reminded reckless drivers, "In addition to the helmet, we advise all motorcyclists to wear protective clothing. And if common sense doesn't tell you that, simply look at real racetracks: have you ever seen a racer in jeans? But whether with or without protective gear, public highways are not racetracks. Please obey traffic regulations, so that everyone can get home safe and sound - that's our wish."
The Cleves Police Department will persistently enforce traffic regulations throughout the district.
