High School Football team, Mater Dei, reclaims victory against Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas
In a highly anticipated clash between two powerhouse high school football teams, Mater Dei High emerged victorious against Bishop Gorman, securing a 27-24 win. The game was a rollercoaster ride, filled with exciting plays and nail-biting moments, ending in a tie at 14-14 after the first half.
Quarterback Ryan Hopkins showed resilience, bouncing back from turnovers and keeping the offensive momentum going against a strong Bishop Gorman defense. His connection with Henry on a 54-yard pass to the one-yard line was a highlight, though a penalty forced a field goal instead of a potential touchdown.
Mark Bowman, a preseason All-American tight end, delivered with touchdown catches of 29 and 36 yards, showcasing his receiving skills. Bowman, a USC commit, had multiple opportunities to shine throughout the game.
Chris Henry Jr., another preseason All-American receiver, also had a stellar performance, scoring two touchdowns, including the game-winner. His contributions were crucial in securing the victory for Mater Dei.
On the defensive side, Ezekiel Su'a, a standout player for Mater Dei, had a sack and deflected a pass, contributing to the team's success.
Bishop Gorman's quarterback, Maika Eugenio, passed for two touchdowns, but it wasn't enough to secure a win for the team. Massiah Mingo had impressive receptions of 62 and 38 yards, but the Monarchs' offense was unable to capitalise on these opportunities.
This win for Mater Dei is a significant step towards their regular-season finale against St. John Bosco on Halloween. The Monarchs will have a week off before Trinity League play against Orange Lutheran on Oct. 3.
Meanwhile, Bishop Gorman will face Santa Margarita in a Trinity League matchup next Saturday.
Coach Raul Lara mentioned the word "resurrection" during a postgame huddle, suggesting that this win has revitalised Mater Dei's season after a loss last week. The victory also resurrects Mater Dei's hopes for a potential matchup against unbeaten Sierra Canyon or a rematch with Centennial in the Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.
The game was played without a weather delay, unlike a 2014 game between St. John Bosco and Bishop Gorman. Overall, it was an entertaining and thrilling contest that showcased the best of high school football.
