Michigan Bound: Austin Hatch Sinks Three-Pointer in Return to Court

In a heartwarming moment for the world of basketball, Austin Hatch, a survivor of two plane crashes, hit a three-pointer for Los Angeles-based Loyola High School on Wednesday evening. This was Hatch's first live game action in two-and-a-half years.

Hatch's teammates rushed the court after he sunk the long-range shot, drawing a technical foul. The excitement was palpable, as Hatch's return to the basketball court was an unbelievable and spiritual event, according to Loyola coach Jamal Adams.

The three-pointer was particularly special for Hatch, who had verbally committed to play basketball at the University of Michigan in 2011. However, due to a special waiver, he stayed an extra year in high school and reclassified as a recruit in the 2014 class.

Michigan Basketball coach John Beilein expressed his excitement about Hatch's return and expected him to be an important part of the team during his years at Michigan. Beilein had given Hatch a basketball scholarship and supported his comeback, a decision he reiterated, stating that he would honor Hatch's scholarship whenever he arrived on campus.

Hatch's journey to Michigan began long before his return to the court. In June 2011, Hatch was the only survivor in another plane crash, suffering a serious head injury, a punctured lung, and fractures to his ribs and collarbone. He was placed in a medically induced coma for approximately two months to control swelling in his brain.

Despite these challenges, Hatch's dream of playing for the University of Michigan remained unwavering. He stated that signing with the University had been a goal of his since waking up from his coma. Beilein reinforced this commitment, telling Hatch that he is on scholarship at Michigan no matter what role he takes.

As for his specific role with Michigan, Hatch has not yet discussed this with coach Beilein. However, Hatch's determination and resilience have already made a significant impact. After the game, Hatch tweeted about his three-pointer and his team's undefeated record, showing his characteristic humility and team spirit.

Austin Hatch's story is a testament to the power of determination and the enduring spirit of sports. Despite the obstacles he has faced, Hatch continues to inspire us all with his courage and his love for the game. As he embarks on the next chapter of his basketball journey at the University of Michigan, we wish him the best of luck and look forward to seeing him in action.
