High School Basketball Competition against Ohio wraps up for Northern Kentucky residents, marking both graduation and college commencement
The 32nd annual Kentucky-Ohio "Battle for the Border" All-Star basketball doubleheader took place on Saturday at Thomas More. The event showcased some of the best high school talent from both states, with close and lopsided matches in both the boys' and girls' games.
In the boys' game, the Ohio All-Stars edged out Kentucky All-Stars with a final score of 110 to 109. Trey Perry, who will play for Miami of Ohio, was named the game MVP for his buzzer-beating step-back three-pointer. Perry scored a game-high 26 points, while EJ Walker, who played basketball for Lloyd Memorial in Kentucky, added 11 points. In the final 3 minutes of the game, Aaron Gutman and EJ Walker took over for Northern Kentucky, helping to rally from a 12-point deficit. Gutman scored 13 points in the game, including a basket with 7.2 seconds left to give Kentucky a 109-107 lead. Unfortunately, until Perry's shot, the Kentucky kids had been leading, but struggled with free throw shooting, going 4-for-14 with misses on six of their last seven.
In the girls' game, the Ohio All-Stars dominated with a score of 93 to 69. Aniyah Carter scored six points, and Juliana Frazee, who is headed to Thomas More, added five points. Caroline Eaglin, who will attend NKU, was the top scorer for Kentucky with five points, spending the most time on the floor for a Kentucky player. Jada Cummins, from Grant County, started and scored five points in the game. Braylin Terrell also scored four points in the girls' game.
As for the future, EJ Walker has announced he will be attending South Carolina of the SEC, and this was his final high school game. Walker has been a standout player in Kentucky, and his commitment to South Carolina is highly anticipated. Walker's father, Mike Walker, served as an assistant coach for the Kentucky All-Stars.
Gutman, who led all Northern Kentucky scorers with 23.3 points per game this season and was the Eighth Region player of the year, is still waiting to hear from colleges about his future. He has heard from Walsh, Lincoln Memorial, and Georgetown (Ky).
Andy Johnson of Cooper did not participate in the boys' game.
The Kentucky-Ohio All-Star basketball doubleheader provided a thrilling end to the high school basketball season, with both teams showcasing their skills and determination. The event serves as a great platform for these talented players to showcase their abilities and take the next step in their basketball careers.
