Pushing Boundaries in the Vatican - High-ranking Cardinal Convicted of Financial Crimes
In a historical first, the Vatican's court has sentenced a once prominent Italian cardinal to more than five years in prison. The 75-year-old, Angelo Becciu, who served as a close advisor to Pope Francis, was found guilty of financial misconduct, including embezzlement, abusing office, and tampering with witnesses (Pignatone, 2022). The primary focus of the case was the Vatican's extravagant purchase of a property in London for 350 million euros.
Never before had a curial cardinal faced such severe sentencing by a Vatican court. Becciu's legal team has announced plans to appeal the verdict (BBC News, 2022). At the time of sentencing, Becciu, who was once touted as a potential papal candidate, had lost his office due to the financial scandal and surrendered his cardinal privileges.
The controversial London property deal is not the only scandal tied to Becciu. Investigators also uncovered evidence of embezzlement in relation to the kidnapping of a cleric in Mali (ibid.). Throughout the legal proceedings, Becciu maintained his innocence, leading to front-page headlines when it was revealed that he secretly recorded a conversation with Pope Francis, presumably in an attempt to clear his name (Jackson, 2022).
The Vatican's corruption trial marks one of the most significant in the city-state's history. The case revolves around the loss-making purchase of the London property's extravagant construction project by the Vatican Secretariat of State, where Becciu played a pivotal role as a department head for several years. Unfortunately, the venture resulted in massive financial losses for the Holy See (ibid.).
Further scrutiny of the London property deal led to the alleged involvement of nine other defendants in corruption, money laundering, fraud, and abuse of office, among other charges (ibid.). The trial, which has lasted over two years, has resulted in various sentences, including acquittals, fines, and probation for some defendants.
The most severe sentence was handed to Fabrizio Tirabassi, a former employee of the Secretariat of State in the Vatican, who received seven and a half years in prison and a fine of 10,000 euros for his involvement in the scandal (ibid.). Becciu was also fined 8,000 euros as part of his penalty.
The trial has heavily impacted the Vatican's reputation, leading Pope Francis to implement reforms within the Curia. The authority to manage assets was taken away from the Secretariat of State and other Holy See authorities, giving it to the Vatican Property Administration (Apsa) and the Vatican Bank IOR instead (ibid.). Despite the efforts, allegations of financial misconduct continued to surface within the Vatican.
