Strap on: Revisiting the New Balance FuelCell SuperComp Elite V4

👠 Going, going... new running shoes? Yep, that's right! This year isn’t short on anticipated launches, with Adidas, Nike, Puma, and New Balance set to drop some terrific new models. But while we're waiting for the V5s to hit the shelves in August, let's take a stroll down memory lane and chat about New Balance's last major release: the FuelCell SuperComp Elite V4.

💰 $$200 worth the cost? In my book, it sure is! And even with all the buzz surrounding the upcoming FuelCell SuperComp Elite V5, I think it's high time to confess my love for the V4s that are still gracing the shelves today. In fact, I'd even go as far as saying they're my favorite race-day running shoe in today's market. Here's why we can't resist the SuperComp Elite V4.

🏃‍♂️ Made for the race track

First things first: the SuperComp range is all about racing. These bad boys aren't your everyday slip-on shoes, and I'd even suggest caution when using them for your weekly interval sessions. What makes them so fast, you ask? The carbon plate is key, providing extra propulsion, sending you flying around the course on race day with minimum hurdles.

👟 Plenty of brand rivals

As a shoe tester, I've tried a fair share of carbon-plated shoes. The Asics Metaspeeds, Nike Vaporflys, and Saucony Endorphin Elites all have their merits, but for my foot and running style, the New Balance Elites are the unparalleled speed demons. However, if you're curious about the finer details, I won't be hacking the shoes open here – simply put, they're engineered for fast long-distance races such as marathons and half marathons.

💪 Comfort where it counts

While the focus is on speed, the SuperComp Elite V4 hasn't forgotten about its users' comfort. The rocker feels steady, offering a smooth, responsive ride without much compromise on that coveted carbon-plated performance. In fact, the Pebex foam in the midsole offers a more comfortable experience than some minimalist, third-party running foam alternatives.

🏆 Verdict

From a personal perspective, this is one of the best shoes I've ever run in. I snatched victory in a half marathon in Verona with these babies on, knocking eight minutes off my personal best despite slippery cobblestones. While experts opine that the V4 still hasn't replaced my 5K PB, it's an ideal long-distance race shoe that won't leave you feeling hobbled afterward.
