Sunny Days, No Rain: What's the Deal with Thuringia's Summer?

It's the heart of the season in Thuringia, but something isn't quite right. Certified meteorologist Dominik Jung has sounded the alarm - a potentially bleak future awaits our Free State. With temperatures soaring well above the usual 25-degree mark, it feels like summer has lasted a lifetime already. But is Thuringia on the brink of another major drought?

Weather in Thuringia: A Disconcerting Outlook

On Monday (23rd June), the temperature might take a slight dip, with thunderstorms making a brief appearance in some spots. However, these will only be temporary as the German Weather Service (DWD) predicts a calming down by Tuesday night.

Vacation Fines, Thunderstorm Bliss:

The upcoming week remains dry, with only a few showers and thunderstorms creeping in by the weekend. The DWD's 10-day trend suggests that only extreme events will surpass the 10-liter mark per square meter - a disappointing amount for the parched land.

Basking in the Heat: Another Hot Summer Ahead?

"The likelihood is high that it will remain very warm to hot," explains Jung in a video from "wetter.net" on Monday (23rd June). "In plain English, summer has well and truly arrived here."

This temperature outlook aligns with predictions from the GFS model ("Global Forecast System") for the coming Tuesday (1st July). According to Jung, a massive warm air incursion is brewing at 1,500 meters, anticipated to fuel the next heat wave, potentially affecting Thuringia and sending temperatures soaring up to 35 degrees. Will it happen though? We'll have to wait and see.

More News:

The same story unfolds in the rainfall forecast, painting a dismal picture of a very dry phase ahead for Central Germany. Jung gazing into the ensemble forecast foresees little rain in sight until the 8th of July.

Thuringia: Of Droughts and Heatwaves

While we wait to see if rain will make a grand entrance, the climate fears persist. Germany is experiencing trends of earlier and potentially longer dry periods during the summer season, resulting in increased drought risk, including in Thuringia. Although current reports don’t explicitly confirm a major drought emergency in Thuringia, the presence of heat protection initiatives and funding activities suggests increased vigilance about water management. So, while we enjoy the warm summer, let's keep an eye on those rain clouds!

During the upcoming week, the weather in Thuringia will remain mainly dry with only occasional showers and thunderstorms. However, based on the 10-day weather forecast by the German Weather Service (DWD), the amount of rainfall is expected to be disappointingly low, further fueling concerns about another potential drought.

Certified meteorologist Dominik Jung's analysis suggests that the likelihood of sustained high temperatures is high, and a heat wave could be on the horizon, potentially causing temperatures to soar up to 35 degrees. This warmer weather is anticipated to continue for an extended period, raising additional concerns about the impact on the region's water management.
