High-end television drama that borders on absurdity makes a comeback in The Morning Show review
The fourth season of the acclaimed Apple TV series, "The Morning Show," has premiered, and it's anything but a conventional return. Starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon in a newsroom drama, the show has introduced a cast of new characters, including Jeremy Irons, Marion Cotillard, and Boyd Holbrook.
In this season, Aniston's character, Alex Levy, finds herself under the scrutiny of the security services, while Witherspoon's character, Bradley Jackson, is brought back from retirement. The show's narrative takes a turn towards the absurd, with plot lines alluding to environmental cover-ups and an AI stitch-up involving Reese Witherspoon's character.
Boyd Holbrook plays a right-wing YouTuber, a role that may be seen as unintentionally controversial given the recent shooting of real-life right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk. Jon Hamm, known for his role in Mad Men, appears as a dapper take on Elon Musk, but his character is no longer in the show for the fourth season.
The new season maintains the level of excessiveness that has become a part of the show's appeal. Aniston and Witherspoon's characters appear deadpan, making them look like unwitting punchlines of a grand farce. Billy Crudup delivers a nostril-flaring performance as Levy's former producer, adding to the show's over-the-top atmosphere.
The show has been described as "absurd" and "a wigged-out fever dream," with some episodes recalling Witherspoon's character gatecrashing the January 6th Washington riots and an episode where Reese Witherspoon's character was blasted into space.
"The Morning Show," which premiered on Apple TV in 2019, does not aim to ground the script in reality like other dramas might. Instead, it offers a flight of fantasy that is so crazily excessive, it's hard to look away.
The main cast for the fourth season includes Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass, Nestor Carbonell, Karen Pittman, Greta Lee, Nicole Beharie, and Jon Hamm. New additions to the cast are Aaron Pierre, William Jackson Harper, Boyd Holbrook, Marion Cotillard, and Jeremy Irons.
As the fourth season of "The Morning Show" unfolds, viewers can expect a rollercoaster ride of excessiveness, absurdity, and drama that is sure to keep them hooked.
