High-Earning Favorites: Mission Impossible, Lilo & Stitch Top Memorial Day Box Office Revenue
Holy smokes, we've got two blockbusters lighting up the screens this holiday weekend! Mission: Impossible-The Final Reckoning and Lilo & Stitch are ride or die, breaking all kinds of records at the box office.
According to Variety, this Memorial Day weekend has made history, with a grand total of $341.7 million worldwide for Lilo. It's blowing initial projections out of the water, raking in $145.5 million domestically and surpassing even Top Gun: Maverick from 2022, earning $160 million over four days. In the US, it's the second-best holiday weekend opener, only falling behind Black Panther's impressive Presidents Day 2018 earnings of $242 million. It's safe to say that Lilo is now one of Disney's most successful live-action remakes, following closely behind The Lion King and Beauty & the Beast, which earned $191 million and $174 million, respectively. Experts predict a whopping $183 million total for Lilo by the end of the four-day weekend.
Meanwhile, Final Reckoning opened strong too, earning $190 million worldwide. With early international releases in Australia, South Korea, and other territories, international audiences accounted for $127 million of that total. By the end of the weekend, its domestic take of $63 million could potentially soar to $77 million, setting a new record for the Mission: Impossible series. Both films have garnered remarkable critical and audience acclaim, with the nostalgia factor playing a significant role in their success. Lilo harkens back to Disney's classic 23-year-old animated adventure, and Reckoning may well be the last film in the series or the final outing for Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt.
The cinematic excitement doesn't stop there, with holdovers like Final Destination Bloodlines, Sinners, and Thunderbolts still drawing crowds. It's been over a decade since audiences have been packing theaters this much during Memorial Day, remarkably improving upon 2024's weaker showings of Furiosa and Garfield. The summer season keeps the good times rolling with films like Ballerina, How to Train Your Dragon, and 28 Years Later in June, followed by Superman and Fantastic Four in July.
