High Court of Calcutta to hear Sanjay Roy's appeal in September regarding rape and murder case

The much-anticipated appeal hearing for Sanjay Roy, the convict in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case, is set to take place in September. This appeal, along with the Central Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) petition seeking enhancement of Roy's sentence from life imprisonment to the death penalty, will be heard by the Calcutta High Court.

Roy was initially convicted by a Sealdah CBI court in January 2025 for the heinous crime he committed against a 31-year-old postgraduate medical student at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 8, 2024. The CBI argues that the crime warrants the death penalty, classifying it as "rarest of rare."

However, Roy's lawyers argue that the conviction was based solely on one witness statement and circumstantial evidence, suggesting that there may be grounds for acquittal. The appeal, known as Sanjay Roy v The Central Bureau of Investigation, is currently under appeal.

Meanwhile, the victim's parents have also approached the High Court seeking a fast-track hearing of the case and permission to visit the crime scene, which has been admitted by the court. The RG Kar Medical College and Hospital case is a tragic reminder of the vulnerability of medical students and the importance of justice.

The ongoing appeal hearing for Sanjay Roy, the convict in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case, is a significant event in the general-news sphere, especially given the CBI's petition for enhancement of Roy's sentence to the death penalty in the politics and crime-and-justice arena. The appeal, known as Sanjay Roy v The Central Bureau of Investigation, has stirred debates around the strength of the evidence used in the case, with Roy's lawyers arguing for potential acquittal based on a single witness statement and circumstantial evidence. Meanwhile, the victim's parents have approached the High Court for a fast-track hearing and permission to visit the crime scene, emphasizing the importance of justice in this tragic case.
