Hidden Equine in Vehicle's Luggage Compartment!
On September 3, 2025, a police officer in Alsdorf, Germany, had an encounter that was far from ordinary during a routine traffic control. The officer spotted an unusual sight—a white pony standing in the trunk of a pink car, with a rug laid out and the backseat folded down.
Initially, the driver did not respond when the officer pointed out the situation. Despite the pony appearing relaxed, with a bucket of provisions by its side, the officer was concerned about the pony's safety and the legality of the driver's actions.
According to the driver, she believed that the pony was securely fastened to a metal hook in the car with a lead rope. However, crash tests conducted by ADAC in 2024 revealed that unsecured or improperly secured objects in a 50 km/h frontal impact can develop up to 50 times their own weight. In this case, a pony weighing 150 kg, if not securely fastened during a crash, could suddenly weigh up to 7.5 tons, posing a life-threatening risk to the pony, the driver, and other road users.
The driver's journey was halted, and she refused to pay the offered fine of 35 EUR on the spot. As a result, a fine notice procedure has now been initiated against her. It's worth noting that the name of the driver arrested in Alsdorf near Aachen in September 2025 has not been disclosed in the available sources.
The Aachen Police used this incident to remind everyone about the importance of cargo securing. They emphasised that it's crucial to secure luggage and cargo properly, even for short distances, as dangerous situations or accidents cannot be completely ruled out. They also reiterated that ponies should not be transported in the trunk of a car, but in a horse trailer.

This incident serves as a reminder to always prioritise safety on our roads, whether we're transporting pets, luggage, or other cargo. Let's all do our part to ensure a safer driving environment for everyone.
