Hidalgo authorities pursue child abuse accusations against congresswoman Alhely Medina Hernández from the Morena party
In a shocking turn of events, Morena congresswoman Alhely Medina Hernández is currently under investigation for alleged sexual abuse and aggravated rape against two minors. The incidents are said to have taken place in April 2022 in the municipality of Zimapán, Hidalgo, Mexico.
The victims, who are the nieces of Medina's brother-in-law, Arturo Williams Trejo, and his wife, Bertha Eva Medina, have identified all three adults as perpetrators. The case has sparked national outrage and remains a significant legal issue in Mexico.
The case is being jointly investigated by the Procuraduría General de Justicia del Estado de Hidalgo (PGJEH) and the Federal Prosecutor’s Office for Crimes of Violence Against Women and Human Trafficking (Fevimtra). The victims and their mother are currently under federal protection in a secure shelter.
In recent legal developments, Morena’s National Commission of Honor and Justice has suspended Medina’s political rights and removed her from party roles. During a court hearing in Pachuca, Judge Jesús Anim Ope Islas ordered preventive detention for Williams and Bertha, while Medina was granted provisional freedom under strict conditions, including a travel ban and mandatory monthly court appearances.
Medical evidence, including biopsies and a positive result for Human Papillomavirus (HPV) in one child, have been presented as part of the case against them. The initial complaint was filed by the minors' mother, Jacqueline.
Medina later requested an indefinite leave from her legislative duties, which the Hidalgo Congress approved. Interpol Red Notices have been issued for the arrest of the fugitive suspects, with two additional suspects currently at large.
This case serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting the rights and safety of children, and the consequences that those who violate these rights may face. As the investigation continues, the public awaits the outcome of this highly publicised and contentious case.
