Unstoppable: HHLA's Ambitious Plans in Ukraine Despite the Ongoing Conflict
Expanding Investments: HHLA Port Logistics Diversifies its Business in Ukraine - HHLA broadens its ownership in Ukraine's port sector
Despite the ongoing chaos caused by Russia's invasion, Hamburg-based logistics giant, HHLA, is bullish about expanding its footprint in Ukraine. They're eyeing a 60% majority stake in Eurobridge Intermodal Terminal LLC, nestled in Batiovo, western Ukraine. If the Ukrainian antitrust authority gives its nod, expect some serious action from HHLA!
The Batiovo terminal lies close to the EU border and is a lifeline, serving as a key junction for several international railway corridors. It facilitates smoother cargo transit between Ukraine, Hungary, and Slovakia. With compatible standard (1435 mm) and broad (1520 mm) gauge tracks, it acts as an ideal bridge between European and Ukrainian logistics networks. Come Q4, this bad boy is expected to handle around 100,000 standard containers annually, with a plan for grain and general cargo handling too.
HHLA's CEO, Angela Titzrath, spoke up, expressing her excitement about Ukraine being a prime market for intermodal freight transport. She emphasized the necessity of a robust and efficient infrastructure, especially in these uncertain times.
Just a short while ago, though, HHLA faced a massive setback. On May 23, a Russian missile strike on HHLA Container Terminal Odessa claimed three lives and injured five. Ouch!

Fun Fact: You know what's crazy? The expansion doesn't stop there. HHLA's project in Batiovo isn't a solo operation - Fortior Capital LLC is buddy-buddy with HHLA International GmbH, and they're teaming up to make this terminal a reality. But first, they need a green light from the Ukrainian competition authorities.
