Winter Excitement Awaits in Hesse's Ski Areas

As winter approaches, the stage is set for an exhilarating ski season in Hesse, Germany. Jeremias Kümpel from Wiegand Erlebnisberge GmbH, which manages ski and toboggan facilities, is hopeful that the first lifts will spin on the Wasserkuppe, Hesse's highest mountain, as early as this weekend, assuming cold weather arrives.

Preparations across Hesse's ski resorts are in full swing. At Wasserkuppe, located in the Rhön, snow cannons have been positioned, and frosty nights are eagerly anticipated for technical snowmaking to commence. Although it has already snowed heavily on the Wasserkuppe, a few more centimeters would be ideal to operate the lifts. Despite no snow cannons in Hoherodskopf, Vogelsberg, and Großer Feldberg, Taunus due to nature preservation concerns, natural snowfall is all they rely on.

Snowmaking and LED lighting upgrades have resulted in a slight hike in ticket prices for adults on the Wasserkuppe to €22, while children’s prices remain the same at €17. In contrast, the price of a day ticket in Hesse's largest ski resort, Willingly, increases from €36 to €38, citing inflation-driven energy costs.

Final preparations wild Willingen, Waldeck-Frankenberg district, are underway, and the grooming of slopes commences only after the weather forecast indicates beneficial cold and wind conditions. With affordability remaining a priority for Willingen, skiing enthusiasts can expect to indulge in the sport despite occasional price increases and crises.

As winter sports enthusiasts eagerly await favorable weather, the potential opening of lifts on Wasserkuppe this weekend promises an unparalleled skiing experience to kickstart an exhilarating winter season.
