Hesse's forests face extreme wildfire risk as drought persists
The Hessian Ministry of Forestry has warned of a growing wildfire threat across the state’s forests. Officials are urging visitors to take extra care as dry weather and high temperatures push fire risks higher. Some southern areas now face particularly dangerous conditions. Unusually dry weather in March and far less rain than normal in April have left Hesse’s forests vulnerable. Most regions now face a moderate fire risk, while parts of the south are at high alert. The ministry has stressed that smoking is completely banned in wooded areas, as discarded cigarettes can easily spark blazes.
Open fires are also forbidden outside official barbecue zones. Drivers are reminded not to block forest roads and to park only in designated areas. Emergency access must stay clear for fire crews. Forecasters predict some relief early next week, with cooler temperatures and light rain expected to ease the danger. Until then, the ministry is asking the public to stay vigilant. Anyone who sees a fire should call the emergency services immediately on 112.
The warning comes as dry conditions and heat continue to raise wildfire risks across Hesse. Authorities have set strict rules to prevent fires, including bans on smoking and open flames. The situation is expected to improve slightly next week if rain arrives as forecast.
