FDP to allow Sunday trading on Advent Sunday in Hesse - Hesse’s FDP fights to ease Sunday shopping rules for Advent season

The FDP in Hesse is pushing for changes to Sunday trading rules. Their proposal would allow shops to open on one Advent Sunday, provided it coincides with a local event. The move aims to support struggling high-street retailers against online competition.

Under Hesse’s current law, stores can open on up to four Sundays or public holidays each year. This is only permitted if the opening ties in with a special local event. The FDP argues that these restrictions put brick-and-mortar shops at a disadvantage compared to online retailers, which operate every Sunday.

If approved, the FDP’s proposal would give local shops one extra trading day during the busy Advent season. The change could help high streets compete with online sellers while keeping the link to community events. The outcome of the parliamentary debate will determine whether the law is adjusted in time for this year’s festive period.
