Hessens Christmas Markets Defy the Dull Weather - Hessens Christmas Markets Defy the Dull Weather
Hesse’s Christmas markets have drawn to a close, with Frankfurt and Wiesbaden reporting strong visitor numbers and festive highlights. Despite unpredictable weather, the season saw millions of guests, lively events, and a boost for local businesses.
Frankfurt’s market wrapped up on Monday, while Wiesbaden’s main market ended earlier—but some attractions, like the children’s market and ice rink, remain open into January.
Frankfurt’s Christmas market attracted 2.3 million visitors this year, matching 2023’s attendance. The ‘Mother Holle’ Christmas tree was widely praised as the most beautiful in recent memory, and the new children’s market proved a hit with families. Public transport also saw a surge in use, with bus traffic at the Wilhelmstraße coach stop rising by 50% compared to last year.
In Wiesbaden, the ‘Shooting Stars’ market brought more visitors to the city centre, giving local shops and restaurants a welcome boost. Though the main market closed on December 23, the children’s market will stay open until December 30, and the ‘Wiesbaden on Ice’ skating rink will remain until January 11. Hanau’s market, meanwhile, overcame a slow start to finish strongly. Vendors reported sales on par with last year, helped by daily ‘door-opening’ ceremonies on Hesse’s largest Advent calendar at city hall. A stage programme featuring local performers added to the festive atmosphere. Hesse’s Interior Minister Roman Poseck (CDU) visited Fulda’s market on Tuesday to review the season’s success. His visit marked the final stretch of a busy holiday period across the region.
The Christmas markets in Hesse have once again proven their popularity, drawing millions and supporting local economies. With Frankfurt’s numbers holding steady and Wiesbaden’s extended attractions keeping visitors engaged, the season closed on a high note. Hanau’s creative events and strong sales also contributed to a festive end-of-year period.
