The 7th-Ranked Education System in Germany: A Closer Look

Move over, Bavaria! Hesse takes the seventh spot in this year's Education Report, jumping up one rank from last year. This annual analysis by the Initiative New Social Market Economy's Employer-Supported study evaluates the education systems of various federal states, focusing on reducing educational poverty, fostering prosperity, and promoting skilled labor.

Here's a quick rundown of how the states stack up: Saxony takes the lead, followed by Hamburg, Thuringia, and Hesse. At the other end of the spectrum, Bremen struggles at the bottom, with Brandenburg and North Rhine-Westphalia fighting for the second-to-last and third-from-the-bottom spots, respectively.

The study considers factors like education spending per student, investments in schools and universities, care conditions in educational institutions, and class sizes. Interestingly, Berlin saw the most significant improvement, jumping from 15th to 12th place this year. Over the past decade, Saarland and Hamburg have demonstrated the most remarkable improvements.

This year's Education Monitor, set to be revealed on Tuesday, will delve into the details of each federal state's performance. Education economist Axel Plünnecke from the Institute of the German Economy points out that the nationwide improvements have primarily been seen in areas like internationalization, support infrastructure, and care conditions over the past decade. However, challenges relating to integration, school quality, and educational poverty have substantially increased.
