Hesse Celebrates 80th Anniversary of its Founding
Hesse, a federal state in Germany, marked the 80th anniversary of its founding this week. Originally named Greater Hesse, the state was proclaimed on September 19, 1945, by the American military government.
Boris Rhein, the Minister President of Hesse, celebrated the occasion, emphasizing the significance of the US's role in the state's creation and subsequent development. Rhein stated that Frankfurt hosts the world's largest US General Consulate and that the US military headquarters in Europe is located in the Clay Kaserne in Wiesbaden.
Rhein described Hesse as the most American federal state, expressing gratitude for the democratic restart and economic recovery the state experienced after World War II. He emphasized that the partnership with the USA has always meant protection and security for Hesse.
Astrid Wallmann, the President of the Hessian State Parliament, also spoke at the event. She referred to the early proclamation of Greater Hesse and the subsequent adoption of the state's constitution on December 1, 1946, after a referendum. Wallmann described the 80th anniversary as an "identity-forming event."
Wallmann also acknowledged that the positive development of the state after the constitution was not a foregone conclusion. She emphasized the need to maintain close ties with the USA for Germany's and Europe's security, despite the current challenges.
The German Press Agency reported the statements made by Rhein and Wallmann, with Rhein expressing confidence that the friendship between Hesse and America is unbreakable and independent of governments. He concluded by stating that Hesse owes a great deal to the American friends for its democratic restart and economic recovery after the war.
Greater Hesse was formed by uniting various former Hessian states into one land. The state constitution came into force after the referendum on December 1, 1946. No new information about World War II, Europe, or America other than what was previously stated was mentioned during the celebrations.
