Footie Time: Setting Sights Higher for Hertha, Potential Contract Extension for Reese

Hertha's Plans for Reese's Lease Agreement in Coming Season - Hertha making preparations for the upcoming season.

Hertha BSC, a 2nd tier football team, has managed to avoid the dreaded relegation - but next season, Hertha coach Stefan Leitl is aiming for more. "Avoiding relegation shouldn't be our goal, and it shouldn't be our claim," said the 47-year-old coach ahead of the last away game against Preußen Münster on Friday (6:30 PM/Sky). The extent to which the ambitions for the next season will grow also depends on Fabian Reese.

The 27-year-old top scorer, currently under contract until 2028, has been offered a kind of lifetime contract by the club, as per some reports. "I'm surprised at how many things leak out," said Leitl about the club's intentions. Being Reese's former coach in Fürth, Leitl certainly wouldn't mind keeping him in Berlin.

Talks for a second offer have already begun for Reese. The player himself has expressed his contentment with the club and the city of Berlin, but football is a fickle game, mate. Reese dreams of playing in the Bundesliga, but whether he'd join any team in the higher leagues is something only Reese's shy self can answer. Even financially struggling Hertha wouldn't have to settle for peanuts in the low millions, considering they've just sold Ibrahim Maaza to Bayer Leverkusen.

Benjamin Weber, the sports director, has already secured the first two offers for Reese. Apart from extending midfielder Michael Cuisance, another key player will continue to stay in the capital. Also, new striker Sebastian Grönning from 3rd division club FC Ingolstadt could help remind Reese of some glorious times with Haris Tabakovic.

Negotiations are in progress with captain Toni Leistner and wingback Deyovaisio Zeefuik. There's no wishlist from Leitl, but he's made it clear where he wants to lead the team. "We know where we wanna go," he said, and that's not just about avoiding relegation.
