Heroes Rescue Dozens of Animals from Cairo Pet Store Amidst Clashes

A group of friends, led by Karim Molyneux-Berry and Hend Ghorab, have been hailed as heroes after rescuing dozens of animals from Ahram Pet Store in downtown Cairo on Wednesday evening. The store had been unattended since Saturday due to ongoing clashes between protesters and Egypt's military and riot police.

The rescued animals, including dogs, cats, guinea pigs, and birds, were taken to a farm in Mariuteya for food and medical treatment. Unfortunately, the fish had to be left behind due to the toxic water caused by the clashes. The storeowner, Hag Mohsen, was unable to return to the store due to allergies and the intense tear gas in the area.

Mahmoud al-Refai from Ain Shams University warns that tear gas is more hazardous to animals than to humans due to their inferior immune systems. The rescued animals are now receiving care and attention at the farm, with the help of local volunteers and animal welfare organisations.

The brave actions of Karim Molyneux-Berry and Hend Ghorab, along with their friends, have ensured the safety and well-being of many animals. Their selfless act highlights the importance of animal welfare, especially in times of unrest. The rescued animals are now on the road to recovery, thanks to the dedication of those who stepped in to help.
