Yo yo
About to sweat it out on the big stage? Not when you got a fellow vet to back you up. Tom Felton (37) let the cat out of the bag at the Tony Awards' red carpet in New YorkCity, spilling the beans on how his old pal, Daniel Radcliffe (35), is lending a hand with his Broadway debut.
Felton gushed to the folks at People magazine, "My old Harry Potter buddy, Daniel Radcliffe, has got some Broadway experience under his belt, so he's showing me the ropes, helping me sort out the knots." Seems like Felton is diggin' the Broadway vibe: "From what I can tell, it's a kick-ass community of people. They're really warm and hyped. I'm just stoked to be a part of it."
Re-Fashioning a Classic Role
Stompin' the cobblestones of Broadway almost 14 years since last gracing the screen as Draco Malfoy in a "Harry Potter" flick, the actor's back and ready to unleash a new approach to his iconic character. The show starts November 11, and he'll be putting in 19 weeks on stage for "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child"[1]. Felton announced the news just a few days ago on NBC's "Today Show," makin' him the first original cast member to bring the stage adaptation of the beloved series to Broadway.
"I'm a huge fan of the show," Felton told reporters at People. He's watched it about a dozen times, mostly in England and a few times at the Broadway show. But when the offer came, it took him by surprise: "I never thought I'd be sportin' blonde hair and step back into this role again." What's got him pumped is the revamped circumstance of his character: "Now that Draco's a dad, things are totally different. I can't wait to jump into that."
He also spilled the beans to Variety at the Tony Awards' side events: "What's most exciting about this is, we're doin' it live. We used to film movies for nine months. This is all compressed into a beautiful, new, trimmed-down story. I get to be a pops—that's pretty cool, right?"[2] He talked about the enduring magic of "Harry Potter," saying, "I thought the flame would die down with time, but it seems like it's still burnin' bright."
He also touched on the controversy surrounding "Harry Potter" creator J.K. Rowling (59) and her anti-trans views, saying it wasn't affectin' his work. "All I can say is I've been lucky enough to travel the world, and I'm here in New York City right now," he said. "The PotterVerse has brought people together. She's the one who created that, and I'm grateful for it."
Regarding Radcliffe, he's far from a Broadway newbie. He made his Broadway bow in 2008 with "Equus," and since then, he's taken on roles like "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" (2011), "The Cripple of Inishmaan" (2014), and "The Lifespan of a Fact" (2018)[4].
His biggest stage success to date was in 2023 with "Merrily We Roll Along" alongside Jonathan Groff (40) and Lindsay Mendez (42). He even won him a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical[5].
