Herford County's Local Elections 2025: Election Results Validated by Committee

On Sunday, September 28, 2025, the runoff election for the district commissioner in Kreis Herford will take place. The results from the initial election on September 14 were announced by the County Election Committee on September 17. Neither Mirco Schmidt (CDU) nor Frank Diembeck (SPD / B 90 Greens) secured more than 50 percent of the votes, necessitating a runoff.

Voters will cast their ballots at the same polling station where they voted in the first election. To vote, they will need to present their voter notification or a valid form of personal identification.

Mail-in voting for the runoff election will be available starting from September 18. Voters who requested mail-in voting for the initial election can also request it for the runoff. However, no new voter notifications will be sent out for the runoff election.

As of the initial election, Frank Diembeck (SPD) garnered 40.57 percent of the votes (44,160 votes), while Mirco Schmidt (CDU) received 43.60 percent (47,452 votes).

In the County Council, the CDU and the SPD are the strongest factions with 15 seats each. The AfD holds 9 seats.

The polling stations will be open from 8 am to 6 pm on September 28. A total of 114,024 voters exercised their right to vote in the election for the County Commissioner, Mayors, and City or Municipal Councils, resulting in a voter turnout of 57.38 percent.

It is important to note that the district administrator serves as the chief electoral officer for the district. However, since Jürgen Müller is not running for election this year, he will hold the office.

The results of the runoff election for the district commissioner will be eagerly awaited on September 28. The candidate who secures the majority of votes will assume the position.
