Herford County's 2025 Local Elections Official Results Assured by Election Committee

Herford District Heads Towards Runoff Election for Landrat Position

The results of the local elections in the Herford district, held on September 17, 2025, have been declared by the County Election Committee. The district election committee, consisting of the chief electoral officer, 10 deputy members, and administrative staff, oversaw the elections.

In the Landrat election, none of the four candidates managed to secure over 50 percent of the votes, leading to a runoff election on September 28 between Mirco Schmidt (CDU) and Frank Diembeck (SPD / B 90 Greens). A total of 114,024 voters exercised their right to vote in the Landrat, Mayor, city, and municipal council elections, with a voter turnout of 57.38 percent.

The CDU and SPD are the strongest factions in the county council, each holding 15 seats. The Greens have 4 seats, The Left has 3 seats, AfD has 9 seats, and FDP has 2 seats. In the city council of the Herford region, the CDU was the strongest faction in the last election, though exact vote percentages for the SPD are not specified. The CDU also dominated in the municipal elections in OWL, including Herford.

Voters will need to present their voter notification or personal ID card to vote in the runoff election. Polling stations will be open from 8 am to 6 pm on September 28, and voters should go to the same polling station they used in the first election on September 14.

Postal voting for the runoff election can be done by those who applied for it in the first election. For those who did not, postal voting applications can be made from September 15 onwards. Postal voting in person for the runoff election is possible from September 18 onwards. No new voter notifications will be sent out for the runoff election. Existing voter notifications from the first election will be valid.

The ballot papers for the runoff election can only be printed after the election result has been determined by the County Election Committee. The district administrator serves as the chief electoral officer for the district, but since Jürgen Müller is not running for election this year, he holds the office of chief electoral officer.

As of now, 198,711 citizens of the Herford district are eligible to vote in the runoff election. Voters are encouraged to exercise their right and participate in the democratic process. Mirco Schmidt (CDU) received 43.60 percent of the votes (47,452 votes), while Frank Diembeck (SPD) received 40.57 percent (44,160 votes) in the first election. The runoff election promises to be a close contest between the two candidates.
