Herford County Local Elections 2025: Election Officials Verify Vote Count
In the Herford district, a runoff election will be held on Sunday, September 28, 2025, to decide the new District Administrator. The runoff election will pit Mirco Schmidt (CDU) against Frank Diembeck (SPD / Alliance 90/The Greens), as neither candidate achieved an absolute majority in the first round.
A total of 198,711 citizens are eligible to vote in the district. Eligible voters will vote at the same polling station they used for the first election on September 14. The polling stations will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on September 28.
The voter turnout for the first election was 57.38 percent, with 114,024 voters participating. Mirco Schmidt received 43.60 percent of the votes (47,452 votes), while Frank Diembeck garnered 40.57 percent (44,160 votes).
Mail-in voting in person for the runoff election can only be done starting on September 18. Eligible voters who did not indicate a desire for mail-in voting for the runoff election can apply starting on September 15. Voter notifications received before the September 14 election will be valid for the runoff election. No new voter notifications will be sent out for the runoff election.
The district election officer for the district area is District Administrator Jürgen Müller this year, as he is not running for re-election. The ballots for the runoff election can only be printed after the election results have been officially confirmed by the Circuit Election Committee.
In the District Council election, the CDU and SPD are the strongest factions with 15 seats each. The AfD has 9 seats, while the FDP has 2 seats. The Circuit Election Committee declared the results of local elections in the Herford district.
Residents of the Herford district are encouraged to exercise their right to vote and help decide the future leadership of their district.
