In just a few days, the political chessboard in Germany will witness a significant shake-up. Six long months of strategic negotiations and horse-trading are nearing their conclusion on Tuesday. Monday: Coalition Agreement, Cabinet Structure, and Farewell Ceremony

  • The Union has already named their ministerial candidates, whereas the SPD is yet to reveal their picks. Lars Klingbeil, the SPD party leader, is slated for the Vice-Chancellorship and Minister of Finance. Additional positions are still up for grabs.
  • By day's end, the 144-page coalition agreement titled "Responsibility for Germany" will be signed, following approval from the Union's executive board, a small CDU conference, and the SPD members.
  • In the evening, the outgoing federal chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) will bid farewell at a grand military ceremony.

Tuesday: Chancellor Election and Swearing-In Ceremony

  • With a majority in the Bundestag, Merz only needs 316 votes to assume the office. While the Bundestag comprises 328 politicians from the Union and SPD, Merz's election is expected to be a foregone conclusion. Historically, the Chancellor's election tally has often fallen below the number of coalition seats.
  • Post-election, Merz will receive his appointment certificate from Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at Schloss Bellevue and will be sworn in at the Bundestag. This will be followed by the appointment and swearing-in of the new cabinet.
  • Afternoon hours will see the first power transfer at the Chancellery and the ministries, potentially also the first cabinet meeting.

Wednesday: Overseas visists and a European Debut

  • Assuming a smooth transition, the new federal chancellor will embark on his inaugural visits to France and Poland, engaging with key European neighbors.

Thursday: World War II Remembrance

  • As a solemn tribute, eighty years after the end of World War II, the Bundestag will commemorate the liberation from Nazi tyranny.

Friday: Further International Engagements

  • Merz may undertake additional foreign trips, as well as continue domestic policy initiatives.
